Senior Outreach

The fourth Tuesday of each month is recorded on the calendars of low-income seniors who live in downtown San Diego – and is surely recorded on our own calendars.   This is the day when FFCC volunteers join these seniors in the Salvation Army courtyard on 8th Avenue.    The seniors, who are registered with the San Diego Food Bank receive non-perishable commodities from Food Bank workers, and stand in long lines awaiting this distribution. This is where FFCC volunteers shine!  Our function is to provide smiles and friendship as we guide the folks toward the tables where the Food Bank workers do the paperwork necessary to ensure that the seniors receive their commodities.

Panera Bakery donates wonderful pastries that are handed out at a table in the courtyard.  These are a special treat for folks that can’t afford such a delicacy. Those who have not yet been processed by the SD Food Bank to receive the commodity boxes are given our Fight Against Hunger meals to keep them going until they are approved.

Since we see many of the same folks each month, a wonderful bond of friendship has been formed.  FFCC volunteers take the elbow of the lady who is legally blind, and she is willing to be led to the Food Bank table in this way.  Volunteers remember some of the physical needs of many of the folks – some with debilitating physical conditions and help however necessary.   Smiles and friendship are the order of the day and these are offered generously by the volunteers.

Everyone is welcome. Students, your volunteer efforts are especially enjoyed by the elderly so join us when your school schedule allows it. In you are interested in volunteering or need more information contact Phil Harris at philffcc@san.rr.com.
